My trip across the big pond to my new home in Ås, Norway took a few days longer than most, as I made a stop over for a couple nights in Iceland. However, I am finally settling into my new digs, enjoying the rural, agricultural setting that surrounds the school, UMB and the town of Ås, and making some new friends. I was graciously received by an old friend who lives in Oslo, and helped me with my arrival by offering to meet me at the Oslo S train station late on Thursday night.
So far my impressions of Norway and the Norwegian people have been fantastic: beautiful and scenic lands (and people!) who are more then willing to graciously receive you and include you. I went to a Manchester United game on Sunday with some new Norwegian acquaintances and was then invited to someone’s home for an afternoon of grilling, good food, good company and conversation. Though most of it I could not understand, my new friends were patient to include me in the conversation every once in a while, which I appreciated!
Today marked the opening day of Introduction Week for the new international students, which included a few presentations from different parts of the administration as well as student organizations. Things seem to be working out well to get us set up for a successful year! I certainly am looking forward to settling into a rhythm with my classes, as well as being able to explore a bit more of this gorgeous place (which is very reminiscent of the coastal areas of northern Maine).
Here are a few photos of my time in Iceland:
